Extreme Engineering – Freedom Ship, Millenium Tower, Strait of Gibraltar
If you’ve been watching the extreme engineering TV series on the Discovery Channel then you will know what I’m talking about. This TV show presents the best and most impressive engineering projects of the future.
Here are a few of the most popular ones:
Freedom Ship
This would be the largest sea vessel ever built, as it would be an entire city at sea. The plan is for this city to circle the globe once every two years, representing the freedom of not being tied to anyone.
The estimated cost is $9 bn, and the ship would be 1 mile in length, 4320 feet wide and 25 stories high.
There are a lot of technological barriers to overcome when building such a ship, as new techniques would have to be used to prevent sagging.
Millenium Tower
This is a massive skyscraper planned to be built in Hong Kong Harbour. The estimated cost of the project would be $10bn and it would take 10 years to build.
This skyscraper would be twice the size of the empire state building, and have everything from hospitals to schools to retail and entertainment. It would essentially be its own city within the building.
Strait of Gibraltar
This is a plan for a bridge over the Strait of Gibraltar, that links Spain and Morocco. The bridge would be nine miles long, making it the longest bridge to ever be built. It would also have to be the tallest.
This bridge would cost $15bn, and would use 1,000,000 miles of wire cable (that’s a lot of wire cable).
The economic implications of building a bridge liek this is massive, as it will essentially increase the economies of both Europe and Africa.
