Konarka Solar Shade Coverings

September 22, 2008 · Filed Under Engineering · Comment

konarkaKonarka and SKYshades are partnering, to make the first solar powered shade coverings.

This will mean that shade coverings such as those for playgrounds, carparks and restaurants, will now have solar cells on them and produce energy.

This seems to be very popular with carpark shading, as lots of money can be made back from the amount of solar cells required. Adding solar cells only increases the shading cost from $80 ot $120, so it is an investment well made.

Konarka technologies is also working on ‘powerbrellas’, so that restaurants and coffee shops can buy umbrellas with solar cells in them. They can then use these for electricity, or to let customers charge up their laptops from the umbrellas. This seems very cool, and I’ve got an image of starbucks now with konarka powerbrellas to compliment their Wi-Fi service.
