Atom Smasher
The Atom smasher is a large hadron collider (or lhc for short).
Basically what that means is that it is a massive ring, about 27 km wide, that moves two beams of particles in opposite directions and then smashes them together.
This will help see if the “God Particle”, otherwise known as the Higgs Boson, really exists. It will also allow for the analysis of subatomic particles. It will also help shed light on the existence of black holes and they are formed and provide more knowledge about dark matter.
This project isn’t without risk, as it has a very small chance of creating a self creating black hole, which can risk the entire world (although the chance of this is basically non-existent).
The facility to do this cost $9 billion dollars, and is built 100m under CERN, which is the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.
Hopefully when it is switched on tomorrow, everything goes well and we will recreate a mini big bang, not seen since the universe was created. It will also hopefully provide all the insight into subatomic particles that scientists are hopeful for.
